About the Book
These candid monochromatic photos try to show the BULL RIDING events organized by RANCH 13 (Slovakia).
Only 50 copies available.
I should probably tell the uninitiated at the beginning what bull riding actually is. It is a rated ride on wild bulls. The rodeo rider holds on to a rope tied around the bull with one hand while the other hand must not touch the animal. On the back of this wild mountain of muscle, he should stay like this for at least eight seconds. Judges evaluate the rider's control, balance and style while watching how well he handles the bull. He gets points too for his strength, energy and effort to dispose of the rider.
Bull riding is rightly considered one of the most dangerous sports in the world.
This collection of bull riding photos is not just a celebration of the extraordinary culture, courage and passion that the sport represents. My images don't just try to capture the adrenaline-fueled moments of riders and animals coming together in a unique dance on the edge. After all, I am not a sports photographer and taking pictures of the rides themselves was not my goal. Nor did anyone hire me for the purpose of taking "publicity" photos. I went bull riding out of my own interest and made this zine for myself as a sort of memento of the moments I witnessed. I hesitated for quite a long time whether to make it available to the public, to you...
I tried to convey here the atmosphere of the arena but also the emotions and details from the background of this event that caught my attention and could have been missed by the spectators or other participants. For the uninitiated, my photos may at least draw a little into the world of bull riding and bring a feeling of excitement and respect for this fascinating sport. However, at the same time, I hope that they will reveal this world to everyone without embellishments. As I saw it and tried to record it myself.
