About the Book
Pat De Caro creates gouache drawings on transparent mylar that evoke dreamlike images. We cannot recognize who these people are, their personality is abstract or should we say universal. They convey shared experiences that are empathetic and recognizable and blur the line between fiction and reality.
There are two different forces at play in De Caro’s work, one wants the materiality, the other the image. She is more concerned with the image created by the fluidity and distortion of the gouache material.
One function of the image, perhaps even the most important one is to open up qualities for us that could be compared to the rustling of leaves in the wind or the gleaming of the surface of water in the sunlight. That is exactly what De Caro’s drawings do, their subtlety reveals the intimacy that we carry within us.
