    The pace of modern life appears to be increasing. We have to do everything in the shortest possible time, and we demand immediate gratification in all aspects of our lives.
    There are times and places when, traditionally, we expected to be quiet, move slowly and find time for contemplation. Museums, art galleries and places of worship are typical.
    Now, it seems, we rush through these as well. Works of art, pieces of our history and beautiful buildings demand time to be appreciated.

    Ken Holland
    Teignmouth, Devon. U.K.

    Ken Holland is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and is a member of the panel which awards RPS distinctions. He has been awarded a Distinction and a Gold medal from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. He has exhibited locally and nationally, including at the Royal Photographic Society members' gallery. His work has been published in a wide variety of books, magazines and journals. He is an Honorary Life Member of Dawlish & Teignmouth Photographic Club: he is frequently invited to lecture and judge at Camera Clubs, and has taught City & Guilds courses. He became interested in photography at a very young age, and has always regarded it as a form of expression. It has the unique ability to capture a brief moment in time. He believes that a photograph should be more than just a beautiful image: it should inform or challenge the viewer.
