    About the Book

From the forward of Portraits of India:

"These environmental portraits, like a fleeting memory of a vivid dream, give just a hint of the incredible palette of the vast Indian subcontinent and its people. This collection is drawn from several sojourns in India, beginning in 1998. My biases are evident: the countryside and village, the quiet scene within a city, the world seldom featured on contemporary Indian TV... What sparks my imagination, what I seek to illuminate, and why I celebrate the opportunity of walking the pathways of India, is that there is so frequently offered a brightness of being, a willingness to connect, that comes forth from the shadow of lives so often tempered by long and difficult journeys."

The focus of this book is the people of India. The photographs range from intimate portraits made with the people I met while traveling, to the more environmental portraits of the human landscape. Along with the vivid colors one expects from India there is a black and white section of portraits from Varanasi. Although this book began as a portfolio for an exhibition, it is now a long term work in progress.

Fifty percent of the profits from Portraits of India will be contributed to Dr. Jain's village school project in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Although I've put years in as an editorial photographer (yes, with some weddings and portraits as well as other gigs) I now shoot primarily when traveling. While I usually carry a camera when out and about, I find it more rewarding simply being in the present moment, open to meeting people, enjoying life as it unfolds. My present focus is in developing a counseling practice for individuals and couples integrating Western cognitive therapies and Eastern mindfulness practices.
