The Sandstone Estates Railway is a privately owned 2' 00" gauge railway system located at the very extensive and well known arable farm (Sandstone Estates) near Ficksburg in the eastern part of the Free State province of South Africa. Sandstone Estates is set in wonderful scenery and, although the railway only traverses a portion of the property, visitors inevitably appreciate both the natural grandeur and the efforts made by this progressive organisation to realise a truly model agricultural operation. The primary route of the narrow gauge railway is 17 km in extent, but laid out in such a manner that continuous running is possible if required. The railway, its locomotives and rolling stock, are but part of a larger agricultural and transport heritage operation, under the auspices of the Sandstone Heritage Trust, which co-exists remarkably well with an extensive modern farming operation. All aspects of the heritage operations seem to be aligned to a common credo : "get it working". And work they do, as the Author proves in this beautiful and informative album, one of three in a series that has been prepared as a tribute to the men and machines of Sandstone Estates.
