    About the Book

    Edit

Phil Douglis and Tim May have been making expressive travel photographs together since 2004, while traveling throughout the United States as well as in Asia, Africa, Central America, and Europe. They often find themselves simultaneously making pictures of the very same thing at virtually the same moment. Yet their resulting images often express completely different ideas about the subject matter. Each of these photographers brings differing personal viewpoints to bear on the various subjects they share. Each of them sees things that the other does not, and each defines subject by bring their own style, passion, and personal vision to bear. In this book, they pair photos that compare and contrast how each interprets the same subject matter. In offering these pairings, they encourage the viewer to look for a "third story" that can often emerge from such contrasts and contradictions. This book is concerned with ideas rather than techniques. The images, and the pairings in which they are placed, ask the viewer to look at them for their ability to express meaning.
