    About the Book

    Edit

The images in this book originate from an 80-mile strip of land along the east coast of Norfolk, Great Britain. This whole coastline is under attack from the elements which, combined with strong tides, savagely erode the edge of the land, thereby fracturing communities and local infrastructure. Attempts to hold off this erosion have, in many cases, failed and some evidence of these failures remains, in the form of surreal structures, both on land and at sea.

A sparsly populated area, Norfolk has a unique charm, boasting unusual locations and some of the finest beaches in the country. There are many relics from its historic past hidden away in the landscape.

In recent years the people of Norfolk have had to embrace modern technologies and much has been invested in the county. The future and stability of the region lie, probably, with wind-farming, gas production and tourism, along with embracing the advances in agricultural practices.

This juxtaposition of new and old technologies compliments the characteristics of the landscapes. There are sand dunes, coastal grasses, stunning beaches, wide open skies and seascapes and a huge variety of birdlife.

This book offers a unique view of the region, capturing its stark beauty and mystical abstraction.

    Steven taylor
    Norfolk, United Kingdom

Born in London in 1956, award winning-photographer Steven Taylor discovered photography at the age of ten, using a camera he found at a local landfill site. Self-taught as a photographer, Taylor worked at many jobs, studying horticulture and starting his own business as a landscape gardener while at the same time experimenting with macro photography and the creation of plant images. In 1994 his receipt of an award in a major photographic competition resulted in a career change and soon he was working full-time as a commercial photographer for one of the biggest agents in London. He gave up commercial work in 2005 to concentrate on fine art photography. His preference is to employ traditional methods, using large format cameras and film, to create limited edition prints on fibre-based papers and applying toning processes to many. Traversing the landscape in the UK and abroad for his work, he's now based in Norfolk, living with his partner, artist Jacqui Fenn.
