    About the Book

    Edit

With photographs shot between 2005 and 2008, Benjamin Niemczyk's "New York City" brings to light a captivating side of the center of the world, filtered through his unique and sometimes quirky lens. Specializing in miniature imaging, alongside a healthy dose of traditional portraiture, the artist has captured both the seen and unseen, revealing details of the city that are easily passed during the frenzy of urban life. Many of these photographs were shot in well-known and in some cases, famous places and yet there is not a hint of the surroundings, paying homage to the great depth and variety that is Gotham. Masked by hurried and furious activity, the fragility of this grande ville is most evident in the painstaking execution of rust dripping, leaves gathering, dust blowing, light bouncing and most important, art surging. Indeed, one need not look too far to find perfect, personal portraits.

The only photographs in this livre that were posed, pre-determined, occur at the very end, on the final two pages and sparse throughout. These portraits were constructed in traditional fashion with the gracious consent of the lovely subjects.

Every other shot was created spontaneously with no physical intervention.
