    About the Book

    Edit

There exists an ancient, once-secret distant land, high above the Pacific Ocean in Taiwan's southeastern corner. It is called 'Jinjhen Mountain', or, 'Golden Needle Mountain'. The name 'jinjhen' describes the tens of thousands of daylilies enveloping the old hillside. Jinjhen, the daylily, remains a highly symbolic flower for the Han Chinese. It is also called 'syuan cao', a symbol of motherhood, and 'wang-you', meaning 'without worry'. When I envision this sacred place, I can only imagine the beauty of a land covered in my favourite flower.

Daylilies belong to the genus Hemerocallis, Latin for 'beautiful for a day' (derived from the Greek word 'hemera' meaning 'day' and 'kalles' meaning 'beauty'). Indeed, a daylily bloom lasts only one day, but a scape will carry many buds to extend the bloom period, and may also rebloom later in the season. My fascination with the daylily has compelled me to create this treasury of photos, taken here at Fairyscape Daylilies, so that I could share my garden with other daylily and gardening friends.

Each photograph throughout this book has been taken with a Nikon Coolpix E3200 digital camera or with a Canon EOS 20D digital camera. All photos were taken by me in my garden, Fairyscape Daylilies, located in the Dundas Valley, Ontario. We are in Region 4 of the AHS, in zone 6, and are members of both the Ontario Daylily Society and the American Hemerocallis Society. My vision for this book has been foremost as an invitation for others to share my love for daylilies and as a work of art, not so much as a reference book; as such there is little text. Each picture includes the name of the cultivar, the hybridizer, and the year of registration with the AHS (not the year it was introduced into commerce). Images of timeless daylily classics as well as cutting edge cultivars grace this book. I have featured many of my favourite hybridizers - Curt Hanson, the Shooter Family, Liz and Jeff Salter, Grace and Pat Stamile, and many more. Although this volume is not a catalogue, I sell many featured cultivars (within Canada only) online at www.fairyscapedaylilies.com. If you would like to see additional daylily and perennial photos, my website also has over 1,000 additional pictures in the galleries. Anyone wishing to use photographs from this book, please contact the author at Michaela@fairyscapedaylilies.com.

Now it's time to relax - brew yourself some Timmy Hortons, snuggle up in your favourite chair (mine is the chaise lounge overlooking my front garden), and enjoy some quiet time with your new book!
