About the Book
A Note to Parents
Life is a deep place.
Every child knows this truth. Every aging grandparent and great grandparent grasps this reality. Yet, in the journey from birth to death we can easily forget the ever-present depth of life. We sometimes lose our way as we seek permanence within the impermanence of the external material world reported to us by our five senses. Throughout history human beings have used “ritual” as a way of unmasking Truth and reconnecting with the Real and the Unchanging. Ritual can serve as a reminder and a gateway into the timeless depth of life from which we are truly never separate.
Joseph Campbell revealed that we live in a time “between the myths.” This is why traditional rituals often do not speak deeply to a new generation. In such a moment as this, meaningful ritual, allowing us to consciously connect with life’s depth, is especially important.
The Children’s Bedtime Ritual represents one family’s experiment over a 35-year journey of tucking children and grandchildren into bed at night. The ritual rehearses thoughts and language of depth that is contemporary to the global and scientific worldview of the 21st Century we all share. We hope you find this booklet not simply a helpful rehearsal to practice with children at bedtime but also an invitation to join the journey as together we seek contemporary language-of-depth that will nurture and sustain the present and emerging generation.
