    Tra il 1915 e il 1923, oltre un milione e mezzo di armeni furono sistematicamente sterminati in quello che la comunità internazionale ha successivamente riconosciuto come il primo genocidiodel ventesimo secolo.

    Nel periodo compreso tra il 1910 e il 1918, le comunità armene, greche ed ebraiche vissero sotto il controllo del governo ottomano, allora guidato dal movimentd dei "Giovani Turchi". In quegli anni, migliaia di armeni furono sottoposte a torture, brutalità estreme e deportazioni forzate. Tuttavia, le loro testimonianze sono rimaste in gran parte ignorate dalla storiografia ufficiale per
    decenni.

    La presente narrazione prende forma da una serie di conversazioni informali avvenute in ambito familiare, principalmente durante i pasti, tra i miei genitori e altri parenti sopravvissuti. Si tratta, dunque, di una forma di storia orale che documenta la sopravvivenza della mia famiglia ai massacri del periodo 1910–1918 e ne segue il percorso esistenziale fino al 1991.

    Nel tentativo di preservare l’autenticità delle memorie raccolte, le testimonianze sono state trascritte fedelmente, senza l’imposizione di una rigida sequenza cronologica. La narrazione si sviluppa secondo un andamento associativo: un episodio rievocato ne richiama un altro,
    intrecciando eventi avvenuti in tempi e luoghi differenti. Tale metodologia riflette la natura dinamica della memoria orale, valorizzandone la fluidità, la profondità emotiva e la complessità
    interpretativa.

    Varoujean A. Tilbian was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the son of Avedis Tilbian, a master shoemaker and survivor of the Armenian Genocide. Raised among stories of courage, displacement, and cultural endurance, Varoujean built a remarkable career that spanned over five decades and four continents. A pioneer and visionary in the printing industry, he helped lead the transition from conventional to digital printing, working as an executive and innovator in the U.S. and Europe. His professional legacy includes shaping early digital printing applications, mentoring teams, and directing product development before turning his creative energy toward writing. His books, ranging from memoir to historical fiction, give voice to forgotten stories and explore the legacy of survival, identity, and justice.
