    About the Book

    Edit

This book shows 53 magazine covers for the year 2024 centred on the Lisbon inhabitant. This project pays tribute to The New Yorker traditional cover art, creating a fictitious magazine called O Alfacinha celebrating the city with a local, national or global aspect.

Alfacinha is a term to denote a person from Lisbon, but the etymology of which is unclear. The first known reference arises in the mid-19th century, in the book Travels in My Land by Almeida Garrett (1846), "For you shall be Alfacinhas forever, supposing that all the squares of this world are like the Palace Square..”. However, a more interesting and amusing explanation is that the term comes from the fact that in the region of Lisbon, lettuce (alface) is an abundant plant, and given the Arabic origin of the word, has been cultivated on a large scale during the Muslim period.

This project also borrows from ideas that were attempted for other cities like Paris (The Parisianer), Barcelona (with The Barcelonian) and Tokyo (with The Tokyoiter), all of which can be found on the internet.
