    About the Book

    Edit

Immerse yourself in Nomads of the 21st century, a visual and narrative work that transports you to the heart of Mongolia's vast steppes, where age-old traditions and emerging modernity intertwine in a fascinating coexistence.

Through black-and-white photographs of rare intensity and a heartfelt narrative, Valérie Kessler captures the life of Altan, a young nomadic shepherd, witness and actor in the upheavals of a changing world. From traditional yurts to herds of yaks, to the emergence of solar panels and highways, this book illustrates with finesse the meeting of past and present.

The fruit of a journey imbued with truth, this book celebrates the resilience and adaptability of nomadic peoples, while questioning our own relationship with nature, progress and harmony with our environment.

An invitation to discover the magic of the Mongolian steppes and to reflect on the universal issues of our time.

With a background in advertising, communications and event planning, her keen eye for imagery and visual storytelling is evident in her projects. In Nomads of the 21st Century, Valérie Kessler presents a compelling combination of storytelling and photography, addressing climate challenges, modernization and the resilience needed to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Her trip to Mongolia, initially planned as a camera-free immersion, took an unexpected turn. Equipped with an iPhone 4, she documented the unique light and majestic landscapes, creating a series of images that embody the intersection of tradition and modernity.
