    About the Book

    Edit

This is a photo essay of the life and times in the Kathmandu valley between 1977-1979. The black and white photography was done with Claire's Nikon camera equipment and the Kodak Tri-X film she used was processed in her small darkroom. The photos are a unique glimpse into the life and culture of the times, which included the increasing number of young western hippies and spiritual seekers coming to the valley to experience the rich cultural and spiritual life in evidence there. Along the way, Claire encountered some of the extraordinary Tibetan lamas who were in residence there at the time to give and receive powerful transmissions and empowerments. She received initiation into the Tibetan spiritual tradition with His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, who sent her to sit with and receive teachings from Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche who was living with his son Jigme in Bodhanath, Rinpoche, who later married and moved to America with his wife Jane Tromge (now lama Khadro) attracted a following of a small group of dedicated western students who stayed around him as he performed his daily dharma activities and gave teachings to them. Claire was given access to photograph many of these activities and also met and photographed other wonderful lamas such as Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and other lamas and monks who would later become influential teachers in the West.

I returned from Nepal and trained as a commercial photographer, but it seems that destiny had other plans for me. The period I spent in Asia and particularly my time in Kathmandu where I met the Tibetan Lamas and took refuge as a Buddhist, changed the course of my life. The notions of ‘space’, compassion and loving kindness, lie at the heart of Buddhism, but are also central to a healing practice. These days I live on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, alternating my time between the Dorrigo Plateau and Coffs Harbour where I still practice part time as an Osteopath. www.clairethompsonosteopath.au
