    About the Book

    Edit

While seeking inspiration during a winter walk, I saw in bundled up trees the exhausted members of a wandering tribe. A story emerged from this dreamlike reality.

One could have had the feeling that these supernatural beings had arrived in the park after a long and difficult journey. However, deeply rooted as they were, this motionless crossing only lasted one winter. Their cloaks were fraying, worn by gusts of wind and the weight of snow and ice.

Among this silent horde were female figures, looking straight ahead, serene; others thoughtful, overwhelmed or grieving; one even seemed to dance in the wind. Male figures stood out, stocky or slender; some determined, reassuring; others weary or even desperate.

Although these images were not taken “in haste” like those of Cartier-Bresson, they are somewhat ephemeral because these strange characters have disappeared; they only existed for a season. Now only this collection of their portraits remains.

    Chantal Fortier
    Ottawa, Canada

Chantal Fortier is a photographer living in Ottawa, Canada. Her work tends to reflect a certain quietness. Seeking humanity above all, her photographs are as much portraits and scenes of life as landscapes, ranging from color to black and white, depending on the subject and the moment. After a career in museums and in government working on cultural and heritage issues, she turned her attention to photography. A workshop in Santa Fe in 2015 signaled the beginning of a radical change and a regular, thoughtful practice. Since then, several classes with renowned photographers and talented fellows have been great inspirations. She has been exhibited three times in two American galleries and retained in online exhibitions in Ottawa. @chfortier
