    About the Book

    Edit

UPDATED 2020. This a Photo Book of the area where The Sufi Muhammad Raheem Bawa Muhaiyaddeen (may God’s peace and blessings be upon him). lived i the 1940's to the early 1980's He is also known as Guru Bawa in Northern Sri Lanka. This publication is divided into three sections: Mankumban, The Guru Bawa Ashram, and Bawa’s Farm. The photos are from 2004 - 2020. In Jaffna, Bawa lived in an old Portuguese warehouse which was rebuilt several times and became the Guru Bawa Ashram, which was always filled with devotees. In 1971 Guru Bawa was invited to the United States by a group of seekers who had heard of him from a Sri Lanka man who was studying at the University of Pennsylvania. On his first visit, the Bawa Muhaiyaddern Fellowship was formed in Philadelphia. After that, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Bawa divided his time between Sri Lanka and the United States. He started to build God’s House at Mankumban on the Island of Kayts with the help of his American, European and Sri Lanka followers. The property had been a coconut grove. Bawa said that he built God’s House in Mankumban for Mary — Mother of Jesus (may the peace and blessings of God be upon her). The area around Mankumban has a lot of history. There is a mosque down the road with a mazar dedicated to a former child of Bawa’s dated 1647. There is also a Roman Catholic Church a mile away dedicated to Mother Mary, and there is a Hindu temple dedicated to a female deity resembling Mother Mary. Bawa’s children (Bawa referred to his followers as children not disciples) in Jaffna and Mankumban are still very loving and dedicated to him after more than 30 years since his passing. Nothing much happens outwardly at Mankumban. People visit, they come, they go, and most don’t see how sacred it is there. In the past, on Fridays for jummah prayers and lunch about 150 people would gather there. Mankumban is still well taken care and maintained by Bawa’s children who live in the neighborhood.
