    About the Book

    Edit

In 1900, Harry Zurbrigg moved from the village of Kurtzville to Harriston, Ontario, where he began his apprenticeship as a baker. This small step started a chain of events which would see Harry and his brothers, Frank, Al and Sam open bakeries in Listowel, Markham, Ingersoll, St. Marys and Stratford. For almost a century, these men and their relatives ran successful businesses, maintaining a loyal customer base through the changes necessitated by evolving technologies, legislation, competition and marketing strategies. This book looks not only at the stories of the bakers themselves, but also at their staff and the baking industry as a whole. The author has spent the last two years collecting the stories of those who worked and shopped at these bakeries, all the while undertaking extensive research into the backgrounds of those involved. Although the bakeries are long gone, their stories live on between the covers of this book.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, puttering in the garden and watching over her small flock of backyard hens.
